Hiking the Pacific Crest Trail

The Adventure

On May 1st, 2002 Pat, Jill and Rick stood on the Mexican / US border at Campo, California, the start of the Pacific Crest Trail.  With 13 years of dreaming, 7 months of planning and 1100 meals prepared and packed into 30 food boxes they would hike through California, Oregon, Washington and finally back to Canada.

For 5 months, Pat, Jill and Rick could be found dreaming about the hike; visualizing and anticipating the amazing places they would see.  Within days of hiking, they realized the trail was

more than just pretty places.  It was about personal growth, testing of one's character and crossing the finish line.  Through the scorching southern California desert, they faced 40-degree barren and dry tail with up to 55 Km stretches with no water.  As Pat, Jill and Rick hiked the mountain of the Sierra Nevada, they survived bear attacks, killer mosquitoes and a climb that equated that of Mount Everest.  Crossing Oregon, they experienced the breathtaking sight of Crater Lake and around the numerous volcanoes of Oregon, including Mount Thielsen and Mount Hood.  With Washington State standing between them and home, it was a climb into the wild, desolate and isolating Cascade Mountains.  The trail passed through Mount St. Helens, Mount Adams and Mount Rainier.  After walking through spring, summer and then into fall, signs of winter would welcome them to Manning Park and mark the end of "A Walk to Remember".
