Part 2 – What Causes Gluteus Maximus
Dysfunction and How Can it Affect the Slings of the Body?
Neuromuscular
Dysfunction
Muscle dysfunction is the result of certain muscles
becoming overactive (tight) and certain ones underactive and is caused by synergistic dominance. Synergistic dominance is a neuromuscular
phenomenon that occurs when the synergists compensate for prime movers to
maintain force production. With
regards to gluteus maximus, the hamstrings take over for the gluteus maximus
in hip extension movement. A second neuromuscular phenomenon that can affect gluteus
maximus is reciprocal inhibition. This is the process when tight muscles
decrease the neural input to the antagonist muscles. For the gluteus maximus this means
iliopsoas has an increase in neural input which leads to a decrease in neural
input to gluteus maximus. This neuromusclar
dysfunction can lead to altered arthrokinematics at the iliosacral joint,
lumbar facets and subtalar joint. The
Affects on the Sub-Systems of the Body
Alternations in the neuromuscular can have an effect in the
slings of the body. Of the four force-couple
sub-systems (Deep Longitudinal, Posterior Oblique, Anterior Oblique and
Lateral), two are affected the most: -
An underactive gluteus maximus could impact the deep longitudinal sub-system, which can have an effect on force
transmission from the ground to the trunk. -
An underactive gluteus maximus could impact the posterior oblique sub-system, which can affect the stabilization
of the body in the transverse plane. The breakdown of these sub-systems leads to the altered
force transmission from the ground to the trunk, and altered transverse plane
control during single leg activities. For More Information
