Foundations for Function: Movement by Design covers the fundamentals of functional training by presenting the health and fitness professional with the programming skills and knowledge essential for professional success. Movement By Design refers to using our bodies the right way. Discover how to use functional anatomy, motor learning principles and a range of assessments to develop comprehensive functional exercise programs.

 

Foundations for Function: Movement by Design is based on fundamental anatomical, neurological, physiological and biomechanical principles. By using the blueprint of the human body as a guide, the goal of the approach is to bring about a functionally operating musculoskeletal system through structural strength and postural balance.

Anthony Carey's educational background consists of a Master's degree in Biomechanics and Athletic Training from San Diego State University, and a Bachelor's degree in Exercise Physiology from Trenton State College. He is a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and is certified as a Clinical Exercise Specialist from the American Council on Exercise.

 

Anthony has spoken throughout the country on biomechanics, posture and their relationship to musculoskeletal pain and function. Prominent venues include the Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington D.C., the Texas Back Institute in Dallas and the UCSD Spine and Joint Conditioning Center in San Diego. Anthony is a special advisor to the California Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, a contributing author to IDEA's Personal Trainer magazine and a member of the Board of Directors of the San Diego Wellness Coalition. His clientele includes professional athletes, professional entertainers and heads of industry thought the United States.

Who should attend?

 

This seminar is geared towards the advanced fitness and rehabilitation professional with at least one of the following criteria:

 

-          Minimum of 1-2 years active experience as a personal trainer

-          Four year degree in Exercise Science or Kinesiology

-          Physical Therapists, Registered Massage Therapists or Chiropractors

-          Athletic Trainers

 

What can you expect to learn?

 

During the 2-day session, the following topics are presented in lecture and hands-on format:

 

-          Functional Anatomy

-          Assessments

-          Motor Learning

-          Corrective Exercise

-          Critical Decision Making in the Exercise Design Process

 

Function and core are the buzz words in the industry. The irony of this is that many health and fitness professionals don't understand functional anatomy. They may understand gross anatomy and isolated muscle action, but not how these systems function together in the body. By understanding functional anatomy, you can understand and design a functional training program. But if you don't understand how the body is integrated functionally, how can you create a personalized functional exercise program? In order to design a personalized functional exercise program we must understand:

 

-          The integrated slings and chains the body utilizes

-          How the body transfers force(s)

-          The properties of stabilization

-          The interdependency of the various systems within the body

-          The multilink response

 

Assessments

 

You can't manage what you don't measure. In other words, you can not gauge progress if you don't know where you started. The assessment is the departure point for anything you will do with your client. Without a through assessment, you will not be able to design an exercise program that will meet the musculoskeletal needs of your client. How can you determine if your intervention is working or working without adversely affecting other aspects of their musculoskeletal system? Three forms of assessment will be covered extensively:

 

  1. Postural
  2. Single leg stance
  3. Overhead squat

 

Motor Learning

 

Understanding motor learning is like putting on a pair of glasses that allows you to see the world of exercise in an entirely new light. You'll suddenly see why an individual would experience challenges with specific movements. You'll see how slowing down can actually accelerate progress! This course will challenge you to rethink many of the ways you have chosen to design exercise programs in the past.

 

The Foundations for Function: Movement by Design seminar will take you through:

 

-          The stages of motor learning

-          Synergies and strategies

-          Altered motor control strategies

 

Corrective Exercise

 

A primary goal of corrective exercises is to help your client, athlete or patient better recruit targeted muscle groups for more dynamic exercises and improve postural alignment. Bypassing this critical step may result in dysfunction and development of imbalances.

 

These corrective exercises can be used with your client, athlete or patient to assist them in recruiting the muscles you want them to use, establishing more appropriate motor programs. The body does this by learning or re-learning functional movements. Corrective exercises should be used in conjunction with the appropriate functional strengthening and flexibility progressions. Learn how corrective exercises can:

 

-          Release hypertonic muscles

-          Activate latent muscles

-          Elicit proprioceptive awareness of desired muscle groups

-          Influence postural alignment and the body's center of gravity (COG)

-          Improve the instantaneous center of rotation of the joints
