Developing the Athlete: Incorporating
Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Practices into Training with Glenn Taguloa and
Scott Vass
Workshop Description:
The objective of this seminar will be to provide the
Kinesiologist with a basic understanding of the principles of athletic
development, and how the inclusion of kinesiology and rehabilitation
practices can be incorporated into the training of the athlete. Topics discussed will include:
Importance of Dynamic warm-up and movement preparation, use of self
myofascial release (SMF) techniques, typical patterns of muscular dominance
and inhibition in the athlete, inclusion of neural activation and
‘pre-habilitation’ exercises for injury prevention, importance of
mobility and stability of various joints, review of athletic balance training
research, discussion of essential
resistance training exercises and energy system development techniques, and
the organization and program design of a training on a session, weekly and
monthly basis.
Learning Objectives:
- Be able to identify
common muscular imbalances that occur in athletes.
- Be able to how to use
mobility, ‘prehabilitation’ and activation exercises to address
and prevent theses weaknesses from occurring.
- Learn the importance of
stability and mobility of various joints in the body for enhanced athletic
performance.
- Learn how to effectively
organize training sessions using these principles on a daily and weekly basis.
About
the Presenters:
Glenn Taguloa,
BSc, RK(c), CSCS.
Glenn
completed his undergraduate studies at the University of the Sunshine Coast,
in Queensland, Australia, finishing with a degree in Sport and Exercise
Science. During his studies, he completed extensive
course work in functional anatomy, biomechanics, musculoskeletal
rehabilitation, cardiac rehabilitation and nutrition. Glenn then
worked as a strength and conditioning coach at Louisiana State University
with the Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Women’s Soccer,
Football and Gymnastic teams. In 2006-2007 Glenn was a performance
enhancement coach at Cris Carter’s FAST Program in Coral Springs,
Florida. Glenn has worked with numerous athletes from NFL, CFL, MLB, AVP, ATP,
and NCAA. Currently, Glenn is a
strength and conditioning specialist at Level 10 Fitness in North
Vancouver. (March 29,
2008 session will be presented by Glenn Taguloa.)
Scott Vass MHK, RK, CSCS
Scott
Vass, MHK, RK, CSCS: Scott has worked as a strength and conditioning coach
with high school, university, national-level and professional athletes for
the past ten years. He began his career as the Assistant Strength and
Conditioning Coordinator for Simon Fraser University athletics, and then
spent two years working in orthopedic rehabilitation. Scott currently works
at Level 10 Fitness in North Vancouver as an athletic development coach, as
well as the coordinator of the Active Rehabilitation program. Scott is also
employed by Wrestling Canada as the Integrated Support Team Coordinator and
strength & conditioning coach for the national and Olympic teams. (Scott Vass was the developer of the
workshop but will not be able to attend March 29, 2008.)
