Biomechanical Limitations in the Female Athlete: Game-Ready / Rehab Applications for Post-op ACL Injuries with Carmen Bott

Workshop Description:

Retrospective research has shown that female athletes are 4-6 times more at risk for Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tears than their male counterparts who play the same sports at an equivalent level (Myer et al 2004).  The incidence of this injury and the growing participation of girls and women in sport has increased public and health care practitioner awareness of this epidemic.  In fact, over 38,000 ACL injuries have been documented in young, female athletes in the U.S.A. per year.  This rapid rate has led researchers to shift their focus and examine the root of the problem and the mechanisms that predispose young females to ACL rupture versus treating the injury once it has already occurred.

Neuromuscular training is the greatest contributor to dynamic knee stability and offers the greatest potential for intervention and prevention (Myers et al 2004).  Female athletes benefit from neuromuscular training because they often display lower baseline levels of strength and power as compared to males.  Training programs can be designed to reduce gender-related differences in force absorption, improve joint stabilization and correct muscle imbalances.  The trend and focus now is on how to prevent the problem versus how to treat it.  And as coaches, we play a crucial role in this process.

Learning Objectives:

- How to assess “function” in the knee after ACL surgery through subjective measures

- How to prescribe the appropriate level of strength and power training

- When to prescribe plyometrics

- How to coach a cue correct technique on exercises

About the Presenter:
