The Adventure

The Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (GDMBR) is a 4337 Km / 2691 mile off road cycling route that travels from Canada to Mexico, paralleling and crossing the Continental Divide. To the west of Continental Divide all rivers lead to the Pacific Ocean while the eastern rivers lead to the Atlantic Ocean. It winds through British Columbia, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico, crossing the Continental Divide 29 times. Most (90%) of the route is forest/county dirt road, but a significant percentage is 4x4 roads, trails and pavement. The highest points of the mountain range from North to South, is as high as 12,000 feet and often above 8,000 for days, if not weeks on end.

The Plan

The Start

I am planning to drive down from Vancouver, BC, Canada to Seattle, Washington and fly El Paso, Texas. I plan to spend one or two days in El Pasco and then hit the road.

I plan to cycle 120 km / 75 mi from El Paso, Texas to Columbus, New Mexico and spend the night camping in Columbus.  On the second day cycle 72 km / 45 mi from Columbus, New Mexico to Hachita, New Mexico.  Hachita is one of the town stops on the GDMRB but it is not the start. It is about 88 km / 55 miles to the start at Antelope Wells which is one of the border crossing into Mexico.

Then from there it is off to Banff, Alberta, Canada.
